Dr. Patrick Girouard has a long academic journey, which started at the University of Ottawa, where he received two Bachelors of Sciences, in Biology (1987) and in Biotechnology (1988). Following these years in Canada’s National Capital, he embarked on a new educational adventure at Universtité de Montréal, in Dental Medicine. He did so under the Canadian Forces (CF) Dental Officer Training Program (DOTP). Upon graduation, in 1993, he was stationed at 14 Wings Greenwood, Nova Scotia, until he was transferred to the operational posting as detachment commander onboard the HMCS Provider, in Halifax, Nova Scotia. After completing his obligatory service with the Canadian Armed Forces he moved to Cap Pelé, New Brunswick, where he established the Cap Pelé Dental Health Centre in 1997. This where he calls home with his wife Suzanne and two beautiful children, Eugénie who is currently in her third year of her medical specialization in neurology at Univesité de Montréal and Mathias who works as a programmer after graduated last year from Mount Allison University in computer sciences. Dr. Girouard has continued his Academic Studies, with a Certificate from the University of New Jersey in Orofacial Pain, in 2006. During these years the integration of digital technologies began, namely with CEREC (Sirona, Germany), BioPack (BioResearch, USA), T-Scan (Tekscan, USA) and Matscan (Tekscan, USA). In 2009, Dr. Girouard undertook a Master’s Degree of Sciences program at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine Craniofacial Pain Center, in Boston, which he successfully completed in 2011, when he was warded with his Master’s Degree of Sciences. He was granted an adjunct Faculty position at Tufts University until 2014. He joined the Kinesiology Department at Acadia University, in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, held an adjunct Faculty position and actively pursues research, until 2022. In 2017, Dr. Girouard moved his dental practice to Dieppe, New Brunswick, where he established the new state of the art, Dental Health Centre, where he continues to provide care for his patients. Dr. Girouard has been involved in numerous research projects and publications. His work enabled him to travel around to the globe to share his knowledge with colleagues from various countries on every continent.
The importance of a proper diagnosis cannot be overstated in the practice of Dental Medicine. The treatments must address the needs and the desires of the patients while focusing on the etiological origins of the presentations. The advancements of digital technologies, such as biometrics are changing the diagnostic process and improving the delivery of treatments. The objective evaluation of the stomatognathic system enables the dental physicians to access the clinical presentations with much improved accuracy and reliability. Parameters such as the velocity and the amplitude of jaw movements, the recorded range and path of motion, joint vibration of the condyle assembly, etc., have changed the perception of the dynamics and health of the system. The perspective of digital occlusion has become a commending diagnostic aid in the study of the forces acting on the structures composing the whole system and how that system reacts to those physical kinetic energies. The proposed program is a brief overview of these biometrics applied to actual clinical situations in reference to existing diagnostic and research criteria. The hope is to incite curiosity and a desire to access and introduce these technologies in the Dental Medicine practice.
Practicing as a dental hygienist and dentist, since 1996, and have been fortunate to work at close to a dozen dental clinics in Denmark and Spain. The thousands of patients I have seen throughout my career so far, has given me a good understanding of what’s important.
We need to have a possibility to do a thorough examination, use next level communication tools, and of course be able to validate our work. And that is exactly what I will be focusing on in my presentation, using equipment from BioReseach, TekScan and 3Shape. Dragging every patient through all the equipment is time consuming and tiring. I will show different cases and talk about the different examinations I do, and why.

Maarten van Geelen is a dentist (1984 RU Utrecht). He has had experience with orthodontics since 1992 after extensive and varied further training. From 2003 to 2011 he was an employee at the CTBG Zwolle. He also works in his own general practice in Heerde, where he has been working with the T-Scan since 2016. In addition to general dentistry and orthodontics, he also treats misunderstood pain complaints.
Being able to measure the patient is what prompted Maarten to incorporate not only the T-Scan but also the EMG and JVA into his practice. To deliver your patient properly, you must be sure that everything is in order. Measuring is knowing, guessing is missing.
Teeth are Talking to You And what is the TMJ telling me? After 30 years working in general dentistry and orthodontics, I started, as an occlusionist, using T-scan. I followed lectures and hands-on patient training from Arjan Starrenburg and Robert Kerstein and my approach to all my work changed. I discovered what a tremendous influence balanced occlusion and articulation, and the role of T-scan has on functionality AND well-being of the patient. Before, during and after treatment. I hope to take you along these 8 years of experience and to let you look over my shoulder in order to change your approach too and thereby contributing to better dentistry. Since last summer, I started using JVA after a decent course by Mike Smith. I discovered that some patients responded differently on occlusal hygiene or kept suffering from TMD. Implementing JVA, and with that starting joint therapy in an early stage of treatment, can help to solve these problems. Although my experience in this approach is still to grow, I also hope to show you cases.
Mariëlle Peuchen graduated in 2019 at the University of Groningen (RUG). Her thesis was a restrospective pilot study about the role of a digital occlusion analysis in the treatment of persistend toothache regarding endodontically treated teeth. With her study, she obtained third place of the Boeringprijs contest.
After her graduation, she stayed at the University Medical Centre Groningen (UMCG) as a dental teacher and a Trainee in Restorative Dentistry. Here she co-supervised another study about the t-scan.
Besides her work at the hospital, she also works in the general practice in Joure (Friesland, The Netherlands). Within the company (Topmondzorg), she is a member of the specialist group Digital Occlusion Analysis.
